China’s booming film market has become an essential consideration for the production of Hollywood movies. On December 10th, the Shanghai American Center will host award-winning author and university professor Aynne Kokas. In her award-winning book Hollywood Made in China, Aynne Kokas investigates the commercial relationships that aim to take advantage of the disposable income of China’s growing middle class—from behemoth theme parks to blockbuster films. American entertainment conglomerates are increasingly partnering with Chinese studios, and designing and producing their product for the Chinese market. An assistant professor of media studies at the University of Virginia, Dr. Kokas will examine these new trends, where the distinctions between Hollywood’s “dream factory” and the “Chinese dream” of global influence become increasingly blurred. Drawing from insightful policy analysis, ethnographic research, and interviews with CEOs, directors, and film workers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Los Angeles, Dr. Kokas offers a nuanced look at China’s new role in the global media industries.
